With Meehan Tully and Associates support, Rural Regeneration and Development Fund 2020 funding was secured by Mayo County Council for the ‘Oval Project’, totalling €8,278,682.
The project entails the development of a new Public Library, Civic Offices, Community Facilities, and Public Realm/Civic Spaces within the existing grounds of the historic former Sisters of Mercy Convent site on Altamont Street, in the centre of Westport town, County Mayo. The first of an ambitious 3-phase Masterplan for the former Sisters of Mercy Convent site will deliver new and improved public spaces for Westport, creating an iconic and welcoming new focal point, the ‘Oval’, for community and civic activities and services.
Project details
- Creation of new landscaped Public Realm Area and official Western Greenway trailhead
- RRDF funding will support the delivery of the following specific outputs:
- Restoration/extension of derelict former Primary (previously Industrial) School for a new state-of-the-art Public Library co-located with Municipal District Offices
- Restoration of decaying laundry buildings to provide a new Community Groups Hub
